Between
the hailstorm at 4:00pm and another rain shower at 8:45pm, we
managed to get 53% of the Dairyland Classic Presented By Revolution
Performance completed Friday night. A decent showing of fans bared the
weather and were treated to short track racing at its finest, with 41
pros
(including 17 National Numbers, featuring the defending seven-time
National Champion #1 Chris Carr), 4 minis, 14 amateurs, 8 Vintage and
13
Quads providing the on-track excitement. Kenny Coolbeth smashed his own
track record in his first practice session, setting a new record of
15.731s/76.282 mph on the 1/3-mile oval. Jop Kopp also broke the
previous
track record with a 15.870s lap.
The digital transponders worked flawlessly, and we must issue our
gratitude to Glenn & Ann Curtiss for providing them to us and
manning the
equipment. Glenn is eager to give it another go next year, so we will
use
timed practice sessions in 2007.
We managed to get through more than half of our scheduled program on
Friday, so the event qualifies as "rain-shortened", not
"rained-out".
This allowed us to pay the pro riders and issue the amateur awards
based
on their heat race finishes. Obviously we would prefer to have
completed
the entire event, but with the amount of rain we got Friday, we will
take
what we can get.
Huge kudos go out to Dale & Kathy Baumann for their tireless
efforts at
salvaging our track and pit area on Friday. Without them, we'd still be
there.
In support class racing, Kole King stole the win from Alexia Hoffman
right
at the finish line for the 85cc Youth win, Jeffrey Carver won his
second
consecutive 250cc Amateur crown, Art Mischler earned another Vintage
class
win on his Triumph, and John Hundertmark claimed the Quad win.
We regret that the weather prevented us from allowing the spectators
into
the pit area. We know that many fans were eager to meet Chris Carr up
front and personal (although I saw him enjoying a bratwurst earlier in
the
day). I heard someone asked him what convinced him to come up to the
Dairyland Classic, and he replied "the food!" Chris struggled
in practice
and the heat race, but he was charging hard in the semi. It was truly
an
honor to see the #1 plate compete at Plymouth again.
Every Pro rider I spoke to after the event were adamant about returning
in
2007 (except Carr, who must keep his future plans under wraps for now),
so
I am confident that we will continue to draw most of the top pros to
the
event. Kenny Coolbeth #31, Shaun Russell #28, Johnny
"Showtime" Murphree
#20, Jethro Halbert #69, AJ Eslick #16 and Rob "Bugs" Pearson
#27 even
attended the Extreme Motorsports Half mile in Beaver Dam on Saturday.
Our
amateur/youth/vintage/quad turnouts seem to fluctuate drastically from
year-to-year, but we will continue to offer some amateur support
classes
to fill out the program with diverse classes.
As always, your feedback is encouraged and most welcome. I thank you
for
your patronage, and I hope to will see you on June 8, 2007.
