JMK Racings Jim Kostelic Tells it from a Team Owners Perspective

FT.com:
Well, do you know why I am here?

JMK:
Yes I do, I won the lottery. Right???

FT.com
Not exactly! But you did get chosen for a Flat Track. Com interview!!!!

JMK: I really like the format on the new web site.. You guys did a great job with the new format. It’s always changing and loaded with new info all the time.

FT.com
How did you become involved in Flat Track?

JMK:
It all started back in the 70’s after I bought my first Harley-Davidson street bike. It was a fast transition into racing. Fred was the manager of Warren Harley-Davidson and had several National riders racing out of the shop. They were racing Harley-Davidson XR-750’s. Two of the riders I remember best are Rodney Bailey and Scott Drake.    Then I got to meet some local racers from my area and started helping them.

FT.com
What kind of bikes were they running back then?

JMK:
Back then there were a lot of two strokes. Yamaha 80’s, 100’s, 125’s 250’s and 360’s. The frame back then was a Champion Frame. My favorite bike was the Bultaco Astros. They were the best looking bike back then with their paint scheme.

FT.com
Tell a little about the guy from Tallmadge you mention a lot.

JMK:
He had a Yamaha 360 in a Champion frame and a Triumph for the half miles. He also rode my Yamaha SC500 in the open class. I still have that bike to this day. ( It’s my next restoration project, but it will go back as a motocross bike instead of a flat tracker.)

FT.com
Did you ever race?

JMK:
Yes, for a very short while. I started out doing some Scrambles and then bought a Yamaha 360 in a Champion Frame to do short tracks. But at the age of 25 I was too old and didn’t heal very well, plus with being an apprentice steamfitter I could not afford to keep getting banged up and taking time off to heal.

FT.com
Do you remember your first National race?

JMK:
First race National I ever saw was in Toledo, Ohio at some horse track where the stands were all glass enclosed. The other thing I remember about it was everyone in the pits involved with a team had to wear white pants and shirts.

FT.com
How did you get to where you are today?

JMK:
It started out about 9 years ago when I bought Tommy Hayden’s Mile bike for my basement family room. Six people heard I had bought the bike and asked me if I need a rider for the bike. I had no intentions of ever racing the bike or getting back into flat track after being away from it for over 15 years. But that changed quick enough.

FT.com
Who was the lucky guy who got your first ride back ?

JMK:
Robert Miller #68 who is now the ARIA Helmet rep.

FT.com
Did you have just one bike?

JMK:
With meeting Robert and talking with him I found out that he was doing pretty good in the 883 class and was in the process of building a Street Tracker for the new upcoming season. I told him you did so well in the 883 class you need to stay there and maybe we need to find an 883 for you to race also. I bought an 883 and a Rotax for him to race that year.

FT.com
How was your first year?

JMK:
It was a good year we had a lot of fun. Robert did really well on the 883 until his best friend/tuner passed away. I still have a picture hanging at my work desk of Tim Russell in the pits talking to Robert at the races.

FT.com
What are your future plans?

JMK:
I would like to have a rider make the top 20 someday. This year I think we have a shot at it. I am currently in the process of building my 4th XR-750. I have two Honda CRF 450’s which should be pretty competitive, and I have my C&J Rotax which I am making a 450 out of.

FT.com
Who is your rider for the year 2006?

JMK:
I have two riders this year, Scott Stump GNC # 77 and a Pro Am rider Bobby DeScenna #71F who I will also be helping out.

FT.com
What is the plan for the 2006 season ?

JMK:
I would like to have a good year, make all the races and get Stumpy into the top 20. Scott has been training real hard this year and will be ready to go starting in Daytona. Scott has a lot of years experience behind him and has tons of potential. He brought the Aprilia for the Lloyds team to the best finish ever at the Mile in DuQuoin this past year. The guy can get it done.

FT.com
How much does it cost to fund a team and maintain a team?

JMK:
Well over the years I quit counting. I am totally self funded and do what I have to do. I have over $200,000.00 in my program now. To keep these things going you need a small machine shop and that is what I have been working on the past several years. I have just ordered my last piece of equipment for the shop, a surface grinder. My goal is to buy all my equipment to start building my own motors and machine my own parts.

FT.com
What are your future plans?

JMK:
I would like to get a tuner for the team. I know with a tuner my rider would be in the top 10 without a doubt. All my equipment is new and just needs the right touch. I can only do so much with my knowledge. I have had some great support from sponsors who I would like to thank right now, Youngstown Harley-Davidson, K&N Filters, Red Line Oil, Saddlemen, Casper Welding Solutions, James Gaskets, Motion Pro, Barnett, Mikuni, Regina Chains, NGK, AFAM, Mothers, Wood Racing, Wiseco, Oury Grips, Sprocket Specialist and Supertrapp.

I am also going to be updating my web site weekly before the season and during the season. People want to see what is going on behind the scenes in the shop and during the race season. Something I would really like to do is have a live web cam like Suzuki had a few years ago. That was really cool.

FT.com
Any closing comments?

JMK:
YES… in closing I would like to say thank you to Wayne and the whole Flattrack.Com team for choosing me to be one of the teams hosted on the front page. I feel it’s an honor to have been picked. Any of our  reader who are at a race, please stop by in the pits and say hello. It’s always nice to meet new people.

FT.com
How can someone contact you to offer support?

JMK:
If anyone wants to get on board with some sponsorship for the team you can get in touch with me on my website www.JMKPRORACING.com or e-mail me at JMKPRORACING@aol.com . I would welcome any support or products. And thanks again Flattrack.Com for taking the time to interview me. See you at the races……….
